Monte Carlo, June 2016. HRH Prince Charles of Bourbon Two Sicilies, Duke of Castro and the Grand Master has decreed and invested as a Dame of the Royal Order of Francis I the Nobel Peace Prize winner from Guatemala Rigoberta Menchu’ Tum. The award was presented on the occasion of the world premier of the documentary film, “Rigoberta Menchu: Daughter of the Maya” at a ceremony held at the prestigious Monte-Carlo Television Festival.
Rigoberta Menchu, 1992 Nobel Peace Prize winner from Guatemala is an activist for the rights of Guatemala’s indigenous people and has dedicated her life to promoting human rights and local women’s rights in her country. She is the only Native American to have ever won the Nobel Peace Prize and since then has continued to campaign and earn praise for bringing international attention to the situation of indigenous people in Guatemala.
Following confirmation of her investiture, the Delegate for the Caribbean Sir Anthony Bailey said: “I am delighted that our worldwide Constantinian Order has recognised such a prominent champion of human rights, women’s empowerment and ethnocultural reconciliation in Guatemala and beyond. She joins an illustrious group of knights and dames within the Royal Order of Francis I that includes another Nobel Peace Prize winner, His Grace The Most Reverend Desmond Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town.”
