London, 17 May 2016. The Delegate of Great Britain and Ireland with much regret announces the unexpected passing of His Honour Judge Sir Gavyn Arthur – a prominent member and supporter of our Delegation.
Sir Gavyn served his city and country with great distinction as 675th Lord Mayor of London (2002-2003) and as a High Court Judge of England and Wales. He was elected Alderman for the Ward of Cripplegate in the City of London and held countless other positions with organisations and bodies throughout the City of London, the country and wider world. In 2004 he was knighted by Her Majesty The Queen for services to the City of London.
Sir Gavyn Arthur was first invested into the Order as a Knight Commander of the Royal Order of Francis I in 2006 and was promoted to the rank of Knight Grand Cross in 2011. Sir Gavyn returned on Sunday from Rome where as a proud Anglican he joined his fellow knights and dames on the Order’s historic pilgrimage to Rome and Vatican City in the Jubilee Year of Mercy.
Sir Gavyn will be greatly missed.
Rest in peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam. Requiescat in pace.
