London, October 2012. In September 2010, Pope Benedict XVI paid an historic visit to Westminster Cathedral in London. It was an event that was watched by thousands on television and the Pope’s personal plea to the young to keep the faith still resonates today.
The Friends of Westminster Cathedral have launched an appeal to pay for a commemorative plaque to mark the visit. To date they have raised just over half the amount required but a further £8,000 is needed. The plaque will be placed at the Cathedral’s West Door where the Holy Father made his inspiring address to the hundreds of young people gathered in the piazza. It will be a permanent reminder of Pope Benedict’s journey to Britain at the invitation of Her Majesty the Queen.
Canon Christopher Tuckwell, Administrator of Westminster Cathedral and Constantinian chaplain has asked if the Constantinian Order can help with this appeal. All those who contribute will be invited to a blessing of the stone and a reception. Two years have now past since the Papal Visit and it is felt that the plaque should be installed whilst the memories of that momentous day are still vivid. The Delegation has commenced this appeal with an immediate donation of £500 / €625.
